The Spanglish Band has been making waves,
as the first of its kind in Milwaukee. Inspired by
their hometown community and its diversity the
band began to form in 2007, creating a repertoire
that would celebrate a more global audience.
Performing Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Cumbia,
Reggaeton, Funk, R&B and more,the
Spanglish Band aims to please!
Spanglish Band sets an innovative pace by extending
an invitation to ALL CULTURES performing both
American and Latino music. The song list is an eclectic
mix of genresand styles sung in both English and Spanish.
Once you experience the Spanglish Band, you will be
captivated by the phenomenal talent and multiplicity
of rhythms.
The band has also been concentrating on original music
that is currently being added to performances. The cd
they are working on will showcase traditional rhythms,
yet incorporate fresh and innovative influences that
extend the conventional boundaries. Traditional rhythms
have never sounded so good, being spiced up Spanglish style!

Spanglish Band esta haciendo su oleada como la primera en su género en Milwaukee. Inspirados en la comunidad de su ciudad y la diversidad, la banda dio sus primeros pasos en 2007 creando un repertorio que llegua a toda audiencia. Presenta Salsa, Merengue, Bacahata, Cumbia, Reggaeton, Funk , R&B y otras con las que la Spanglish Band les complacera.
Spanglish Band presenta un paso innovador, extendiendo una invitación a todas la culturas ejecutando música tanto Latina como Americana. La lista de canciones es una mezcla ecléptica de generos y estilos cantados en inglés y en español. Una vez que tengas la fortuna de escuchar Spanglish Band vas a estar cautivado por el talento fenomenal y la multiplicidad de ritmos.
La banda tambien se ha concentrado en música original que en la actualidad se estan añadiendo a sus presentaciones. En el CD que estan trabajando presentara ritmos tradicionales pero incorporando influencias frescas e innovadoras que sobrepasan las barreras convencionales. Los ritmos tradicionales nunca antes sonaron tan bien, siendo sazonadas con el estilo de Spanglish!
ULISIS SANTIAGO - owner/congas
I remember when I used to follow my father around as a kid, begging
to go to his gigs with him. From the moment I realized what music was,
it became a part of me...a part of my soul!
Humility keeps Ulisis from letting his phenominal natural born talent go
to his head. He is always improving upon his skills and believes that the
minute you think you know it all, you stop learning. Ulisis began playing
professionally in 1995 with a local mixed music band called Tropical Heat.
At the same time, he was performing with Borinbomba, a cultural group
that was educating the community about traditional bomba and plena music
from Puerto Rico.
Since that time, he has been a free-lance musician exploring many styles
of music with groups such as: Kojo, Abraxis, Bajo Zero, 4K-Torce,
Salsa Power, Punto de Vista, New School Salsa Band, Madisalsa, Nabori,
Michael Drake, Jeno Somlai, the Luis Diaz Quintet, Clave y Afinque and
various Flamenco muscians.
The Spanglish Band idea came from his love of a variety of music and
cultures. It also came as a response from the requests of the local
community. The Spanglish Band is reaching both the Spanish and
English speakers with a mix of songs from various groups and Spanglish
original songs.
ULISIS SANTIAGO- dueño/congas
Recuerdo cuando solía perseguir a mi padre mientras era niño, y cuando comencé a ir a sus presentaciones con él. Desde el momento en que me di cuenta lo que era la música, ello formó parte de mi….parte de mi alma!
Su humildad es lo que ha mantenido a Ulises que su talento, fenómeno natural de nacimiento, no se le suba a la cabeza. Siempre está mejorando sus destrezas y cree que en el momento que pienses que lo sabes todo, es cuando te limitas de aprender. Ulises comenzó a tocar profesionalmente en el 1995 con una banda local de música de varios ritmos llamada Tropical Heat. Al mismo tiempo se presentaba con Borinbomba, un grupo cultural que estaba educando a la comunidad sobre la música de bomba y plena tradicional de Puerto Rico.
Desde entonces, ha sido una lanza libre como músico, explorando muchos estilos de música con grupos como Kojo, Abraxis, Bajo Zero, 4K-Torce, Salsa Power, Punto de Vista, New School Salsa Band, Madisalsa, Nabori, Michael Drake, Jeno Somlai, El Quinteto de Luis Diaz, Clave y Afinque y varios músicos de Flamenco.
La idea de la Banda Spanglish vino de su amor hacia la variedad de culturas y música. Además de la petición de la comunidad hispana local. La Banda Spanglish alcanza tanto al hispano parlante como a los que hablan ingles con una mezcla de canciones de varios grupos y las canciones originales de Spanglish.
DENNIS LÓPEZ - lead singer
Lead singer, Dennis Lopez is a true entertainer. When the Spanglish Band
was forming, Dennis was the first to come to mind for its lead singer.
With his versatile vocal abilities, he can master any genre Spanglish
throws at him. He is currently writing originals for the band. Not only
is he a tremendous singer, he can make the most difficult dance moves
seem completely effortless as he performs with his dance group,
Mambo Elegancia.
Born in Puerto Rico, his talents cross the arts with his passion in singing,
dancing and playing instruments. It all began for him at the age of 13,
when he traveled playing Bomba and Plena, traditional Puerto Rican music.
He is an international performer, instructor and choreographer, dancing
and singing for 23 years. Performing in numberous Salsa Congresses he
represented Puerto Rico for 5 consecutive years, touring in Europe.
Lopez recently participated in the Chicago finals of “So You Thing You
Can Dance” season three and was the winner of “Rumba with the
Stars 2007”. For the past 8 years, he has been part of two local bands, Bajo Zero and Nabori. Dennis is the director of Mambo Elegancia, a local dance group, that astounds the audience with their fanciful footwork and
artistic forms.
DENNIS LÓPEZ- cantante principal
Voz guía, Dennis López es un verdadero entretenimiento. Cuando la Banda Spanglish se estaba formando, Dennis fue el primero que me vino a la mente para ser el cantante principal. Con su versatilidad y habilidad vocal, puede dominar cualquier género que Spanglish le requiera. Actualmente está escribiendo canciones originales para la banda. No solamente es un tremendo cantante, sino que puede hacer los movimientos más difíciles de baile, sin el menor esfuerzo al igual que se presenta con su grupo de baile, Mambo Elegancia.
Nacido en Puerto Rico, sus talentos van desde el arte y la pasión por cantar, bailar y tocar instrumentos. Todo comenzó para él a la edad de 13 años, cuando comenzó a viajar tocando Bomba y Plena, música tradicional de Puerto Rico. El es un artista internacional, instructor, coreógrafo, bailarín y cantante por 23 años. Presentándose en numerosos Congresos de la Salsa, representando a Puerto Rico por 5 años consecutivos por Europa.
López recientemente participó en las finales de la tercera temporada de Chicago “So You Thing You Can Dance”y fue el ganador de “Rumba with the Stars 2007”. Por los pasados 8 años, ha sido parte de dos bandas locales, Bajo Zero y Nabori. Dennis es el director de Mambo Elegancia, un grupo local de baile, que asombra la audiencia con sus fantásticos juegos de piernas y formas artísticas.
Jose E. Laboy, born and raised in the small town of Maunabo, PR.
Jose started singing at a small age in the church his family attended. At the age of 11, his family makes the move to Milwaukee,WI were he later started playing in his brother's christian band "Ecos De Su Voz" as a percussionist and sometimes subbing in as a drummer and bass player as needed.
A few years later he began singing in local bands such as
Salsa Power, Isla Adentro, Orquesta Fuego Latino in Madison, WI
and lending his talent as a background vocalist with different local
bands. June 30th, 2010, Jose joins the ranks as a vocalist with
Spanglish Band as he sings for the first time with Spanglish Band
at Summer Fest. What a great addition he is to the group!
JOSÉ LABOY- voces
José E. Laboy, nacido y criado en el pequeño pueblo de Maunabo, PR. José comenzó cantando a una edad temprana en la iglesia que su familia asistía. A los 11 años su familia se mudó a Milwaukee, WI, donde luego comenzó a tocar en la banda cristiana de su hermano, “Ecos De Su Voz”, como percusionista y en ocasiones como baterista y bajista según fuera necesario.
Unos años más tarde comenzó a cantar en bandas locales como, Salsa Power, Isla Adentro, Orquesta Fuego Latino de Madison, WI y prestando su talento como voz de fondo con diferentes bandas locales. En Junio 30 del 2010, José se une a la lista de la Banda Spanglish como vocalista, cuando cantó en el Festival de Verano. Que tremenda adición es él para el grupo!
With our firecracker, Bobby "Bongo" there is never a dull moment. The
Spanglish Band loves his excitement and dedication to the music.
Trujilo started his music career at the age of 14, playing trumpet in high
school. It was too loud at home to practice so he gave it up and was first
tenor in the school choir. Later he joined an R&B band and various singing
groups. Bobby is bringing a little of this flavor to the band with an
old-school remix. "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone" has never
sounded so good!
His first quartet was with Sonica Latina playing bongos and singing
chorus. Later he joined other groups such as: Likes of Nacon,
Salsa Power, Sabor, Kalidad, Clave Afinque, Isla Dentro and finally
now with the Spanglish Band.
BOBBY TRUJILLO- bongo-tambora-vocalista
Con nuestro petardo, Bobby “Bongo” nunca hay momentos opacos. La Banda Spanglish adora su dedicación y su entusiasmo hacia la música.
Trujillo comenzó su carrera musical a la edad de los 14 años, tocando la trompeta en la escuela superior. Era muy ruidoso practicar en la casa por eso lo dejó para pasar a ser el primer tenor en el coro de la escuela. Más tarde se unió a una banda de R&B y cantó para otros grupos. Bobby está trayendo un poco de su sabor a la banda con su mezcla de la vieja escuela. “Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone” nunca sonó tan bien!
Su primer quarteto fue con Sonica Latina, tocando los bongoes y cantando coros. Más tarde se unió a otros grupos como Likes of Nacon, Salsa Power, Sabor, Kalidad, Clave y Afinque, Isla Adentro y ahora finalmente con la Banda Spanglish.
Dave began playing the drums at the age of twelve, while attending his
local church. Mainly self-taught, he would later participate in school bands and musical programs that would prepare him for a career in music and to aid in the development of his musical skills, while being an active
member in the jazz ensemble, marching band and choir.
During his post high school years, Dave began playing professionally
with various bands throughout Milwaukee, WI (his hometown) and the
Midwest region, while studying with Victor Soward and later Luis Diaz.
Some of the bands Dave has performed with are Urban Jazz featuring
Terry Sims, Kojo, The Dazz Band, Dazzle, and Citizen King.
He is also a private drum instructor and works as a youth counselor for
at-risk teens. This position gives Dave the privilege and opportunity to
use music as a teaching tool and as an alternative to curb youth violence
and delinquency. He recalls during his adolescent years that he would use
music and different life experiences as his alternative to joining gangs,
hanging out and causing problems in the community. This serves as the
foundation for his music outreach program/ministry "by way of the drum." Dave also is currently working on creating his own line of
custom drums.
Dave puts that percussion spin into the Spanglish Band mix that keeps
them sounding fresh and innovative. With his eclectic love of music,
Dave is eager to dominate any genre that comes his way.
DAVID JOHNSON- baterista
Dave comenzó a tocar la batería a la edad de 12 años, mientras asistía a su iglesia local. Mayormente se instruyó a sí mismo, mas tarde participó en bandas escolares y programas musicales que lo fueron preparando para su carrera musical y lo ayudarían en el desarrollo de sus destrezas musicales, mientras estaba activo como miembro de un conjunto de jazz, banda de marchar y coro. Durante sus años posteriores a la escuela superior, Dave comenzó a tocar profesionalmente con varias bandas a través de Milwaukee, WI (ciudad natal) y la región medio-oeste, mientras estudiaba con Victor Soward y Más tarde con Luis Díaz. Algunas de las bandas con las que Dave se estuvo presentando fueron, Urban Jazz con Terry Sims, Kojo, The Dazz Band, Dazzle, y Citizen King.
Además es instructor privado de tambor y trabaja como consejero para los jóvenes en riesgo. Esta posición le da la oportunidad a Dave y el privilegio de usar la música como una herramienta de enseñanza y como una alternativa para la lucha en contra de la violencia y la delincuencia juvenil. El recuerda que durante sus años de adolecente prefería usar la música y sus diferentes experiencias como alternativa para no unirse a las gangas, juntillas y causar problemas en la comunidad. Esto le sirvió como fundación para alcanzar su programa/ministerial “By way of the drum”(por el lado del tambor). Dave además está trabajando actualmente creando su propia línea de tambores.
Dave le da el giro y la mezcla a la percusión en la banda Spanglish, que les permite sonar innovadores y frescos. Con su amor ecléctico por la música, Dave está deseoso de dominar todos los géneros que se le crucen en su camino.
ORLANDO SANTIAGO - guitar/cuatro/vocals
Orlando learned how to play the guitar at the age 7 and join his first band
at the age 12. The first instrument he learned was the guitar, then he went
on to the bass, conga, bongos, sax, cuatro and the classical guitar. After a
move to Milwaukee from Rochester, NY at the age 15, he joined a 13
piece kids band that played a variety of music. At the age 18 he relocated
to the southern part of the United States where he was introduced to
bluegrass, rockabilly, country, gospel and southern R&B funk. Back to
Milwaukee in his late 20’s he took up a semester on music theory and
studied and played with the best musician’s in the state.
Orlando has been influence by many musicians and teachers that came
from different backgrounds and cultures. Being blessed with the
opportunity to be surrounded with such talented musicians in his lifetime, he can honestly say “I have no favorites”. He simply enjoys the universal language of music and the company that comes along with it. Orlando is also familiar with a variety of musical programs, software and hardware.
ORLANDO SANTIAGO-guitarra/cuatro/voces
Orlando aprendió a como tocar guitarra desde la edad de 7 años y se unió a una banda por primera vez a los 12. El primer instrumento que aprendió fue la guitarra, luego el bajo, conga, bongoes, saxofón, cuatro y guitarra clásica. Después de mudarse de Rochester, NY a Milwaukee, WI, a la edad de 15 años, se unió a una banda de 13 niños que tocaban música variable. A los 18 se mudó al sur de Estados Unidos, donde conoció el bluegrass, rock, música de campo, música evangélica y R&B del sur. De vuelta a Milwaukee ya en sus 20 tomó un semestre en teoría musical y estudió con los mejores músicos en el estado.
Orlando ha sido una influencia para muchos músicos y maestros que han venido de diferentes antecedentes y culturas. Ha sido bendecido con la oportunidad de estar rodeado con tantos músicos talentosos a lo largo de su vida, honestamente puede decir “ No tengo favoritos”. El solamente se une al lenguaje universal de la música y la compañía que ello conlleva. Orlando está familiarizado con una gran variedad de programas musicales, en disco duro y blando.
Angel Luis “Luisito” Pacheco began his music career in church at the age
of 11. A mentor in his church took Luisito under his wing. Noticing the
talent Pacheco displayed, he quickly assigned him to the band
Voces Christianas. Luisito became an attraction as he was the youngest
member in a band with all adults. Years later he was inspired by his late
best friend, Tony Guzman, who introduced him to salsa. Luisito caught
the fever for salsa. Tony showed him the core of playing Latin music and
from there Luisito’s talent took over. Pacheco also owned and directed
the Christian salsa group, La Orquesta Israel.
Luisito was referred to the Spanglish Band in 2010. Not only does he play
timbales but he also enjoys adding into the vocal section. He is always
willing to take his music to a different level. This makes him a perfect
addition to the band’s percussion section!

LUISITO PACHECO-timbales
Angel Luis “Luisito” Pacheco comenzó su carrera musical en la iglesia a la edad de 11 años. Un mentor de su iglesia tomó a Luisito bajo su ala. Notando el talento que Pacheco mostraba, rápidamente lo asignó a la banda Voces Cristianas. Luisito se convirtió en la atracción al ser el miembro más joven en una banda de adultos. Años más tarde fue inspirado por su mejor amigo, Tony Guzmán quien lo introdujo a la salsa. Luisito agarró la fiebre por la salsa. Tony le enseñó el núcleo, la esencia de tocar música latina y de ahí el talento de Luisito tomó las riendas. Pacheco además es el dueño y director de la Orquesta de salsa Cristiana, La Orquesta Israel.
Luisito fue referido a la Banda Spanglish en el 2010. No solo toca timbales sino que también disfruta aportar en la sección de voces. Siempre está dispuesto a llevar su música a un nivel diferente. Esto lo hace la adición perfecta a la sección de percusión de la banda.
Pacheco actualmente está trabajando en seguir desarrollando su talento practicando infinitamente. Además se está concentrando en algunas canciones de salsa originales para agregar a la línea musical de Spanglish.
TONY RIVERA - piano
Tony is the youngest one in the group yet has the talent of a seasoned musician! Born and raised on the Southside of Milwaukee, music has
always been something that has interested him and caught his attention.
He started playing keys at the age of 7 years old, and has had a passion
for music ever since then. Growing up, he has been exposed to many
different genres of music such as Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Jazz, Hip Hop, RnB and much more.
Tony takes his knowledge of both English and Spanish genres and fuzes
them together to help form an eclectic sound that The Spanglish Band produces. His humble personality and incredible sense of humor helps
keep the band with a smile on their face!
TONY RIVERA-piano
Tony es el más joven del grupo, pero ya cuenta con el talento de un músico con sazón. Nacido y criado en el sur de Milwaukee, la música ha sido algo que siempre le ha interesado y le ha cautivado su atención. Comenzó a tocar las teclas del piano a la edad de 7 años, y desde entonces tiene la pasión por la música. Durante su crecimiento se ha expuesto a muchos diferentes géneros de la música como la Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B y mucho mas.
Tony toma su conocimiento de los géneros del inglés y el español, y los fusiona para ayudar a formar el sonido ecléctico que produce la Banda Spanglish. Su personalidad humilde y su increíble sentido del humor ayudan a mantener la banda con una sonrisa en sus caras.
As Milwaukee's best bass player, Maldonado adds a special flair to each performance. His love of music crosses all genres and his unique style can integrate with any type of music. This is just the type of thing that the Spanglish Band loves.
At 15, a family member put a bass in his hands and said “play this”. He decided it was a great idea so he took classes in high school. He started shorly after with a local band called Just Jammin. Since 1981 he has played with numberous local bands like Arizon Star, Latin Invation Combo 83+84, Abraxis and Punto de Vista Orchestra.
CANDIDO MALDONADO-bajo-voces
Como el mejor bajista de Milwaukee, Maldonado añade una aptitud especial a cada presentación. Su amor por la música cruza todos los géneros y su estilo único se puede integrar con cualquier tipo de música. Este es el tipo de cosas que la Banda Spanglish ama.
A la edad de 15 años un miembro de su familia le puso un bajo en sus manos y le dijo “toca eso”. El decidió que era una gran idea y se puso a tomar clases en la escuela superior. Poco tiempo después comenzó a tocar con una banda llamada Just Jammin. Jake's experience with the Spanglish Band is no longer new to
him as he has been with Spanglish now for over 3 years! He is a natural and is always striving to perfect his execution on
the trumpet.
Jake has been studying and playing trumpet for over 15 years.
He has a degree in music from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, where he studied trumpet with Bob Baca. When Jake is
not playing with the Spanglish Band he is working as a band instrument repair technician at White House of Music in Waukesha.
JAKE HEYER-trompeta/voces
La experiencia de Jake con la Banda Spanglish ya no es nueva para él, ya que ha estado con Spanglish por más de 3 años. El es muy natural y siempre está luchando para lograr alcanzar la ejecución perfecta de la trompeta.
Jake ha estado estudiando y tocando la trompeta por más de 15 años. Tiene un grado en música de la Universidad de Wisconsin, Eau Claire, donde estudió trompeta con Bob Baca. Cuando Jake no está tocando con la Banda Spanglish, trabaja como técnico de reparación de instrumentos en White House of Music in Waukesha.
KENNY KUNZ - sax/flute
Without intimidation, Kenny steps out towards the audience to showcase his musical solos. As a seasoned musician, it's easy to see
why he's a local band favorite. Whether he's belting it out on the sax or the flute, he is always giving a great performance.
Born in Milwaukee, WI, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. Past member of Punto de Vista Latin Orchestra and Old School Soul R&B Band.
Present member of Big Swing Face Big Band and Spanglish Band. Studied jazz composition with Dominic Spera and studied saxophone with Eugene Rouseau at Indiana University. Buyer for White House of Music stores.
KENNY KUNZ-saxofón/flauta
Sin intimidación alguna Kenny se posa frente a la audiencia para presentar sus solos instrumentales. Como un músico con sazón, es fácil ver por qué él es favorito de las bandas locales. Ya sea que él está corriendo con el saxofón o la flauta, el siempre ofrece una gran presentación.
Nacido en Milwaukee, WI, y graduado de la Universidad de Wisconsin-Eau Claire con un grado de Bachillerato en Educación Musical. Fue miembro de la Orquesta Latina Punto de Vista y Old School Soul R&B Band.
